The ARTAS procedure and its advantages

An innovative technology for high quality hair transplants

ARTAS™ Extraction

The ARTAS™ robotic system is the first and only robotic hair transplant technology available worldwide.

Using guided imagery, the surgeon assists the ARTAS™ robot in extracting follicular units precisely. Thousands of follicular units can be extracted in a single session, whatever the type of hair (straight, curly, afro, etc.)

Below is a download link to a PDF document (French language) published by the Société Française de Chirurgie Plastique Reconstructrice et Esthétique (SOF.CPRE). It provides detailed information about hair transplant procedures.

Beyond manual techniques

Speed And Precision

Follicular units are selected and extracted by an intelligent algorithm aided by an intuitive control system. The procedure guarantees the preservation of a natural look of the donor area. Designed to optimize the surgeon’s abilities and craft, the ARTAS™ system consistently delivers great results.

The ARTAS™ system has been developed both by robotic experts and leading hair transplant specialists. It uses guided digital imagery and an intelligent algorithm to optimize graft extraction. The characteristics of follicular units are tracked in real time at an actualization rate of 60 adjustments per second. The HD interface provides multiple views of the donor area and allows the surgeons to adjust extraction parameters without interrupting the procedure. Thanks to the ARTAS™ procedure, follicular units are extracted with a speed and precision well beyond what manual procedures can provide.

  • The ARTAS™ algorithm carefully selects the best follicular units to be extracted
  • The robot-transmitted imagery allows for extreme, micron-level precision
  • The donor area size is minimized and retains a natural look post-procedure

HOW DOES THE ARTAS™ ROBOT WORK?

The ARTAS™ procedure restores hair density by transplanting hairs from the back or sides of the scalp to the blading areas. Our surgeon uses the ARTAS™ system to extract healthy follicles.

The ARTAS™ technology uses digital imagery to generate a very precise cartography of the patient’s follicular units. Our surgeon then uses the robot to precisely and cleanly extract grafts. The donor area will maintain a natural look. The surgical support team then meticulously re-implants the grafts on the scalp’s recipient area according to a pattern discussed with and approved by the patient.

TYPICAL STEPS OF AN ARTAS™ PROCEDURE

The scalp’s donor area for follicular unit extraction will be shaved to about 1mm length so that the ARTAS™ system can easily analyse and detect follicular units. A local anaesthetic is administered so as to make the procedure totally painless. The ARTAS™ system produces a detailed cartography of the donor area. This way, the best follicular units to extract are selected.

Under our surgeon’s supervision, the system extracts follicular units from the donor area in such a way that a natural look is maintained. This process goes on until the required number of grafts have been extracted. The follicular units are the transplanted to the balding areas according to the implantation design agreed upon with our surgeon. These transplanted grafts will produce permanent hair.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

Most patients resume work a day or two after the procedure. One week after the transplant, both donor and recipient areas look the way they did before the procedure began. Very visible results can be seen six months after the procedure. Nine months after the procedure, the head of hair looks dense and natural ; this look will last for life.

What is a follicular unit?

We all know what a hair follicle is, but few people realise that hairs grow in batches on the scalp. These groups of hairs are called follicular units and generally comprise 1 to 4 follicles. During a hair transplant procedure, single-hair follicular units are transplanted along the hairline in an irregular, natural-looking manner. Multiple-hair follicular units are transplanted above the hairline, across the selected balding area in order to provide density. This process ensures a permanent and perfectly natural-looking result.

The ARTAS™ performance

Compared to manual procedures, The ARTAS™ robotic system improves surgical performance in three key areas where robotics have proven their reliability and accuracy.

In the last decade, robotics have allowed dramatic improvements in many types of surgical procedures. Robotic systems have been developed to help surgeons when procedures require difficult, repetitive and precise surgical movements. Their precision also means less invasive procedures and no scarring, which is a big plus for patients.

Thanks to this technological advancement, Restoration Robotics has brought hair transplant technology to a new level of sophistication and performance. Hair transplants are now safer, more precise and more consistent.

Precision
  • The robotically-guided procedure ensures appropriate angulation

  • Follicular unit parameters are updated 60 times per second

  • Micron-level precision

Control
  • Surgical skills are applied with greater speed and precision

  • Key parameters such as puncture depth and angle are defined very precisely

High yield
  • Fatigue-resulting mistakes and irregular donor area extraction patterns are avoided

  • Follicle transection rates are minimized

A comparison of the FUT / “ hair strip technique" and the robotic ARTAS™ hair transplant procedure

FUT / "strip" technique
  • Wide target including fuzzy & afro hair
  • the technique requires the use of a scalpel to cut out a strip of the scalp at the back of the head
  • NEW : the graft implantation process can now be robotically-assisted thanks to the ARTAS Site Making technology. The ARTAS robot allows for the optimisation of recipient area hair density and prevents human error from occurring during implantation.
  • social eviction and healing/scarring times are longer, pain is greater
  • the donor area will keep a large visible scar ; for men with short hair, this scar can be hidden with a scalp dermography session, also offered by The Clinic.
  • the procedure is long as the strip needs to be cut into single follicular units by hand
  • transection rates are higher because of human error
  • beyond 1,000 grafts, the cost per graft is higher given how work-intensive the procedure is.
ARTAS™ Procedure
  • Wide target including fuzzy & afro hair
  • the technique requires no scalpel and is minimally invasive and painless
  • social eviction is minimised and the healing time is short
  • the donor area will show no scar thanks to the small size of the extraction punch
  • the donor area will maintain a perfectly natural look
  • the recipient area will have a very natural look
  • extraction angle and depth have a micron-level precision
  • very fast procedure: up to 3,000 grafts can be transplanted in a single session
  • he cost per graft is low and the graft quality is high
  • transection rates are low (3 to 5%), even for fuzzy/Afro hair
  • requires the donor area to be shaven

A DEDICATION TOWARDS CLINICAL EXCELLENCE

The ARTAS™ robotic system is the result of a decade of R&D involving some of the most respected and proficient hair transplant specialists.

The ARTAS™ robotic system was approved by the FDA in 2011 after thorough testing and trials.

In addition, the ARTAS™ robotic system has received CE certification from the European Union as well as other major institutions worldwide.

Restoration Robotics continues to collaborate with a growing number of hair transplant specialists in order to develop new ways of using the ARTAS™ technology with the aim of ever improving patient experience and results.

ENHANCED EXPERIENCE FOR THE PATIENT

Almost 10 million people are potential hair transplant candidates, but only a fraction of these people actually chose to go through the procedure. For many, traditional manual procedures seem daunting and long recovy times are a deterrent. More and more candidates are looking for minimally invasive procedures that can guarantee safe and consistent results.

The very minimally invasive ARTAS® Robotic System offers just that : consistent, quality results with low patient recovery times.

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the FAQ section of The Clinic’s website

WHO IS ELLIGIBLE FOR AN ARTAS® HAIR TRANSPLANT PROCEDURE ?

All types of patients, whatever their ethnicity or hair girth :

  • Balding men

  • Balding women

  • Men or women who wish to redesign their frontal hairline

  • Men or women who wish to densify any type of balding spot

  • People who’ve had traumatic head injuries and wish to cover potential scars

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER AN ARTAS® HAIR TRANSPLANT PROCEDURE ?

The procedure being non-abrasive, the patient may at most feel a slight stretching sensation during the procedure. Weak painkillers may be administered if required.

Moist pads or vaporised water may be applied to the donor and recipient area regularly during the 2 to 3 days after the procedure. Some of the transplanted hairs may fall out but their root remains intact and the hair will grow back over time.

Serious complications are extremely rare.

AT WHAT AGE CAN A HAIR TRANSPLANT PROCEDURE BE UNDERGONE ?

Small procedures may be performed on patients as young as 20 years old, but this is rare and depends on various criteria.

Obviously, further balding may occur, so younger patients should consider waiting for a relative stabilization of the balding process. A precise treatment plan will be discussed with the surgeon during the initial consultation.

HOW CAN I KNOW IF I’M A VALID CANDIDATE FOR THIS PROCEDURE ?

Many criteria come into account :

  • Patient’s general health
  • Hair texture
  • Hair density
  • Scalp surface characteristics

All these aspects will be verified by Dr Aharoni.

I HAVE CURLY/AFRO HAIR, CAN I UNDERGO AN ARTAS PROCEDURE ?

Fuzzy and curly hair have a particular anatomical and physiological structure. The graft usually has a helicoidal shape and its root is curved.

Therefore, until ARTAS™ was granted the proper permissions to transplant such hairs, only the traditional scalp strip transplant method could be performed on them. The ARTAS™ “scanner” technology now allows a precise and reliable punch extraction of the follicular units.

Transection rates remain low at 3 to 5% of follicular units.
